Assistant Professor Shun Kobayashi from the University of the Ryukyus Visits for Academic Exchange
Professor Shun Kobayashi visited our department on May 22nd. In the morning, he delivered a special lecture introducing the unique pollination mechanism of the Mucuna genus. As Mucuna relies on external forces to squeeze the wing and banner petals, causing the enclosed stamens and pistils to spring out, it is primarily pollinated by mammals. Professor Kobayashi observed the pollinator species of Mucuna macrocarpa in different locations (Kyushu, Okinawa, Taiwan, Thailand). Through data collection and observations using automated cameras, it was discovered that Japanese macaques are the primary pollinators in Kyushu, Okinawa is mainly pollinated by Ryukyu flying foxes, and in Taiwan, red-bellied squirrels are the primary pollinators.
In the afternoon, he held a discussion with students participating in this year's international joint program, introducing the University of the Ryukyus and the origin of the course.
