Invitation to Lecture by Director Liu Tangbi of Genomics Biotechnology Company on the Topic of Technology Ethics Course

On November 21, 2022, the College of Science invited Director Liu Tangbi of Kailongomics Biotechnology Co., Ltd. to campus to give a lecture on "Bioethics - A Systemic Challenge that Crosses Domains Across the Timeline." Director Liu believes that ethics focuses on attitudes towards others and the rightness or wrongness of behavior, encompassing both individual and societal levels, making it a complex and conflictual issue. Taking the example of professionals in the field of biomedical science, they should adhere to the following four principles:

  1. Principle of Beneficence - Performing medical care activities that are beneficial to patients.
  2. Principle of Non-Maleficence - Avoiding actions that harm patients' well-being.
  3. Principle of Autonomy - Respecting autonomous choices made by individuals with the capacity for autonomy.
  4. Principle of Justice - Upholding people's basic rights to preventive healthcare and medical treatment.

Bioethical issues will evolve over time with technological advancements, similar to the prohibition laws that existed in ancient times; it's the passage of time that leads to changes in the framework of legal systems. Therefore, when facing future bioethical issues, the fundamental attitude should be to understand the diverse and ever-changing nature of the issues. It requires multi-dimensional consideration, dialogue among various fields, mutual respect, a balance between regulation and progress, and safeguarding the fundamental principles.
